Alstom upgrades gas turbines in the UK and U.S.

Turbomachinery International, Jan/Feb 2008

Alstom has been awarded a contract by Intergen for the supply and implementation of compressor upgrades for two GT26 gas turbine units at Coryton combined cycle power station in Essex, UK. The upgrade, including plant modifications, will improve the combined cycle output by more than 40 MW. All work will be undertaken during a planned outage in the summer of 2008.

Meanwhile, the OEM has upgraded four of seven GT11D gas turbines in the Long Beach Generating Station located in Long Beach, CA. The upgrade included a complete retrofit of the control systems for four gas turbines.

The 600 MW combined cycle plant was originally opened in the 1950s as Edison Power Plant 2 and was modernized in 1976. The plant was closed due to age and inefficiency after 28 years of commercial operation.

The combined cycle plant has been modernized and reconfigured as a gas-fired, simple cycle plant providing peak power to southern California. Alstom supplied emission control equipment to allow the plant to meet California's stringent air quality standards. The plant went back into operation after the upgrade in August 2007.
