Supplying to cogen plants in the Iberian peninsula

Turbomachinery International,  Mar/Apr 2008

Rolls-Royce has received two new contracts from paper manufacturers in Spain and Portugal for RB211 aeroderivative-powered electrical generating sets to be used in cogeneration plants. The units are also covered by ten-year service agreements.

Europac (Madrid, Spain), a supplier of packing paper, corrugated board and packaging elements, has ordered one of the RB211-GT61 units, rated at 31 MW, for installation at its DueƱas paper mill in northern Spain. It will join three RollsRoyce 501-powered generating sets to become part of a plant providing both the electrical and thermal energy (super heated steam) required to support a planned increase in paper production at the site. Excess electrical power produced by the new plant will be exported to the Spanish national grid.

A planned increase in paper production by Europac's wholly owned subsidiary Portucel Viana at its Viana do Castello paper mill in Portugal has resulted in a second order for an RB211-GT61 genset for this site. One RB211 genset is already operating at the site with a 25MW steam turbine to meet the existing electrical and process requirements.

Rolls-Royce today announced a new order from the Brazilian state oil company, Petrobras, for an additional four gas turbine power generation packages of RB211 valued at $73 million for use on a new offshore platform. This brings the number of Rolls-Royce gas turbine generator sets for Petrobras offshore projects to 27 since 2001.
