Calling climate leaders

Area Development Site and Facility Planning, May 2002

THE EPA HAS LAUNCHED the new Climate Leaders Program, which EPA Administrator Christie Whitman calls a key component of the administration's new climate policy.

The voluntary new program challenges businesses to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and, according to EPA, provides a significant opportunity to achieve the greenhouse-gas-intensity reductions set forth in the administration's new policy. Partners in the program will work with EPA to develop corporate-wide greenhouse-gas emissions inventories and set aggressive, long-term greenhouse-gas reduction goals. After the program partners complete their greenhouse-gas inventory, EPA will work with them to develop a customized emissions-reduction target.

Among the Climate Leaders Charter Partners are FPL Group, General Motors, Holcim (U.S.) Inc., Interface Inc., Lockheed Martin, Miller Brewing Company, Norm Thompson Outfitters, S.C. Johnson & Son, Cinergy Corporation, Bethlehem Steel Corporation, and PSEG.
