Green power honorees

Area Development Site and Facility Planning, Dec 2002

THIS FALL, private companies and public agencies were recognized by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their environmental leadership in purchasing "green" power. Green power is electricity generated by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, water, geothermal, biomass, and biogas.

The honorees are members of the EPA's Green Power Partnership and include Advanced Micro Devices, in Austin, Tex.; the state of New Jersey; Pennsylvania State University; Johnson & Johnson facilities in California, Texas, and New Jersey; the U.S. Army's Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Adelphi Labs at Fort McNair; the state of Maryland; and Technology Transition Corp.

Partners in the Green Power Partnership have made a combined total commitment to procuring more than 500 million kilowatt hours of green power annually. If generated by conventional means, the emissions associated with that much electricity would include more than 800 million pounds of carbon dioxide - roughly the amount of carbon dioxide produced by about 80,000 cars and absorbed annually by 100,000 acres of forest.
