General Motors Readies Fuel Cell Vehicles for Consumer Leasing
Area Development Site and Facility Planning, Oct/Nov 2006
ONE YEAR FROM NOW, GENERAL Motors (CM) plans to begin leasing 100 hydrogen fuel cell-powered sport utility vehicles, which emit only water from the tailpipe, in the United States, Europe, and Asia. CM has not yet determined the cost of or distribution plans for the Chevrolet Equinox, but company officials suggest it will lease for short periods to ensure wider testing opportunities.
The vehicle is engineered to drive at least 50,000 miles on one cell, with hydrogen tanks that will require refilling approximately every 200 miles; CM has partnered with Shell to set up hydrogen fueling stations in New York, Washington, and California. The company aims to have wide commercial distribution of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles by 2010.
