Siemens postpones fuel cell manufacturing

Power, Jan/Feb 2003

A sluggish energy market coupled with a technology that is not quite "ready for prime time" have forced Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp (SWPC, Orlando, Fla.) to delay opening its $122-million fuel cell manufacturing plant in Pittsburgh, Pa. "Development of the fuel cell market has slowed," concedes Melanie Forbrick, a spokeswoman for SWPC.

When it was first announced in October 2001, the SWPC facility was expected to begin production this year; the first fuel cells were scheduled to be ready for the commercial market by 2004. Siemens Westinghouse now is considering making the fuel cells available to the commercial market by 2006.
