TRANSCANADA PROPOSES GROUNDBIRCH PIPELINE

Energy Processing Canada, Nov/Dec 2008

To serve the developing Montney tight gas play in northeast British Columbia, TransCanada Corporation plans to file an application with the National Energy Board in the first quarter of 2009 for a new pipeline up to 42 inches in diameter.

TransCanada proposes to construct and operate the Groundbirch Pipeline as an extension of its Alberta system. Should the NEB accept TransCanada's request that its wholly owned subsidiary, NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd., come under federal jurisdiction, that company could build the pipeline. As a provincially regulated pipeline, NGTL is not permitted to cross provincial borders.

Groundbirch will consist of about 77 kilometres of pipe and related facilities, including metering facilities and valve sites. It will be designed to transport up to about one bcf of natural gas by 2012. The proposed in-service date is late 2010.

In other company news, TransCanada closed a $1 -billion common share offering in November.
