Space radars planned

Signal, Sep 2002

German and Swedish firms have been given the go-ahead to build a space-- based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system with a resolution of better than one meter. Known as the SAR-Lupe system, the radars will be based on five satellites in three different orbits approximately 500 kilometers (300 miles) above the Earth's surface.

OHB-System AG (www.ohb-system.de) has chosen Saab Ericsson Space (www.space.se) to build the large reflector antennas for the radar systems. Each SAR reflector will be more than 3 meters (10 feet) in diameter, and they will be placed on deployable booms that will be built by Saab Ericsson Space's subsidiary Austrian Aerospace of Vienna.

Germany's Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement in its Ministry of Defense is the program's customer. The first launch is slated for 2005 aboard a Russian launch vehicle.
