Commercial Missile Defense Flies

AEROSPACE

An antimissile system for commercial airliners recently completed its first scheduled flight. The JETEYE infrared missile defense system was installed on an American Airlines 767 flying from New York to Los Angeles.

The flight is the start of the final phase of a U.S. Department of Homeland security (DHS) program testing the suitability of counter-missile systems on commercial airliners. The technology already had been successfully evaluated on an American Airlines test aircraft and an ABX Ak Incorporated cargo aircraft.

As part of the DHS Counter Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) program, JETEYE will be installed on two more American Airlines 767s flying daily cross-country routes between now and March 2009. The evaluation will demonstrate the system's maintainability, reliability and overall suitability to the airline industry. Developed by BAE Systems (www.baesystems.com), JETEYE detects incoming MANPADS and blinds the missile's sensor with an infrared beam.
