On several occasions in the past few years surfing has even been banned on the 46-mile coastline, which runs from the movie-star- studded town of Malibu southwards. In addition, a second study by a group of government agencies found that toxic metals regularly fall from the polluted sky to the ground and get washed into the ocean by heavy rain during winter storms.

Almost 10 tons of zinc, for example, is estimated to enter the bay yearly, said the report by environmental engineers for the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project.
