Crawfie retired to Aberdeenshire, where her house was on the road to Balmoral overlooking the River Dee. She attempted twice to take her own life. On her death in 1988 she left a shoe-box, full of photographs, cards and letters, to the Queen, which was taken into the royal archive. Her affection, it seems, had endured her ostracisation. What, if anything, the Queen felt must remain, as ever, a mystery.
