JOHNSTON Press, owner of The Scotsman and a raft of regional and weekly newspapers including the Fife Free Press and Yorkshire Post, confirmed that John Fry, head of rival group Archant, has been appointed chief executive. Fry takes up his position on January 5 next year, replacing Tim Bowdler, who is retiring early in 2009.

His credentials include nine years as president of information company Dun & Bradstreet for the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa. Fry, who started his career with Procter & Gamble, has an MBA from the Insead management school. Shares closed at 31.25p.
