Letter: Hopping mad
Independent, The (London), May 4, 2000 by Anthony J Gouldwell
Sir: I learn with surprise that Reeboks are the most fashionable footwear on the morris circuit ("The Knack: How to morris dance this May Day", 28 April).
I always had the impression that the repertoire was handed down to the us by rural labourers who honed their terpsichorean talents hopping the clod in their heavy all-weather workboots. I cannot help but wonder what these sturdy sons of toil would think of fashion slaves tripping around in trainers while claiming to represent the morris.
Surely the style of dance must be affected. Perhaps that is why 3/ 4 is described as a common time-signature for the dance. Morris waltzes must be a novelty. What next? Soft-shoe clog-dancing?
