Genoa Summit: `I feared for my life' - shooting officer
Independent, The (London), Jul 23, 2001 by Paul Peachey
THE POLICE officer who shot dead a protester during the G8 disturbances claimed yesterday that he acted in self defence.
Mario Placanica, 20, told investigators that panic broke out after his vehicle was surrounded after taking a wrong turning and arriving at a spot that was at the centre of Friday's troubles. He said that one of three officers was injured and they were suffering from poor visibility as clouds of CS gas spread throughout the area.
"I shot without taking aim. I had been hit on the head and was bleeding and feared for my life," he told investigators. "They were trying to pull me out of the vehicle."
The dead man, Carlo Giuliani, was photographed holding a fire extinguisher apparently preparing to throw it at the vehicle. Mr Placanica, from Catanzaro, southern Italy, could face a charge of manslaughter.
