Interior & Design: Interiors notes

Independent, The (London),  May 22, 2004  by Compiled by Caroline Wingfield

Brightness walls

Some shops scream for attention, others make a noise only dogs can hear. The new Ballantyne Cashmere shop in London will have your pooch utterly confused. The inspired choice of linen fabric as wallpaper (set against the neon bright merchandise) was designed in the 1940s by Austrian architect Joseph Frank.

303 Westbourne Grove, London W11 (020-7493 4718).

Budding talent

Inspired by the petals of a desert flower she stumbled across in California, Patricia Urquiola's new Bloomy chair gives the impression it's just waiting to burst into bloom. The soft lines and scooped shape make it something we'd gladly park our bottoms on, while the unusual colours will help transform the pale wastelands of the average living room into a brighter landscape. And its neat size means you could use it as a dining chair. From pounds 500 at Aram, 110 Drury Lane, London WC2 (020-7557 7557).

Designed for living

It's hard to believe there are still any warehouses left to convert in London's achingly hip Clerkenwell. But new 59 bedroom hotel The Zetter has been dragged from the C19th straight into the C21st by interior designers Precious McBane. Relax in the bar (below) beneath a five storey glass roofed atrium. The Zetter, 86-88 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1 (020-7324 4455).

Going Dutch

Guidebooks are full of information we never get round to reading, especially on short trips. The successful Style City series takes its lead from style magazines where pictures take pride of place over words. The facts are all still there in useful chapters (sleep, eat, shop, retreat) but set against the lush photography it feels more immediate, and a lot more fun. The latest additions are Amsterdam (above) and San Francisco. The former reminds us how much this fantastic city has to offer (aside from the obvious) such as ultra- cool hotels and one-off design shops. `Style City Amsterdam', out now, published by Thames &Hudson, pounds 14.95.
