Former Mexican president's brother murdered

Independent, The (London),  Dec 8, 2004  by Mark Stevenson

PROSECUTORS SAY they have video images of people leaving the scene where Enrique Salinas, the brother of the former Mexican president Carlos Salinas de Gortari, was found suffocated to death in a car.

Investigators are studying the footage from the incident, in the city of Huixquilucan, just west of Mexico City, on Monday. A person is seen getting out of the car in which Mr Salinas was found with a plastic bag over his head. The figure left by another vehicle.

Alfonso Navarrete Prida, the state attorney general, said Mr Salinas, 51, was probably killed for personal or business reasons: "He was a businessman with financial problems. I don't think we're talking about a politically motivated crime."

French police had been investigating Mr Salinas, the reason for which remains unclear. Officials in Mexico, who do not believe he was the victim of a kidnapping for ransom, said there were bruises to the face and elbows, but no signs of a struggle and that he probably knew his attackers.
