Letter: Living wills

Independent, The (London),  Dec 20, 2004  by JANE AIKEN HODGE

Sir: I am grateful to Virginia Ironside for widening the debate on euthanasia. The fog of public hypocrisy is stifling. I will defend (to the death) anyone's right to go on living a life without quality, if that is their wish. But why should not I have an equal right to a tidy death when I feel the time has come, either for physical or mental reasons?

Like Virginia Ironside's friends, I am appalled at the idea of dragging out an existence as an expensive vegetable on the NHS. Pass me the hemlock please. But only when I ask for it. Right now, all this mealy-mouthed talk about the hazards of living wills seems to be making a tidy little death more difficult to achieve. A depressing thought.
