Science & technology: CURSOR

Independent, The (London),  May 4, 2005  by Michael Pollitt

Make time for blogs

Feel swamped by online news? Don't have enough time to browse your favourite blogs? Then you need Really Simple Syndication (RSS) " the smart way to deal with information overload. Ideal for blog addicts, RSS was developed to allow the blogging community to share its latest entries. RSS-enabled web pages (or web feeds) are read by a feed reader or news aggregator, which then displays any updated entries. So instead of having to repeatedly visit your favourite blogs for unseen postings, the new content is sought out for you. RSS can be found at bloglines.com, a free online service, or with programs like Newz Crawler, FeedDemon and Awasu for Windows PCs, NetNewsWire and Newsfire for Mac OS X, and the Mozilla Firefox browser.

n A bigger, better Gmail

What can you do with two gigabytes of online e-mail space? That's the new minimum storage amount offered by Gmail, Google's free e- mail service. Gmail also recently added fonts, bullets, highlighting and colours for a richer e-mailing experience. How to sign up? Ask around, as current users usually have 50 invitations to give away.

n Spammers beware

Comment spammers have a new foe in the shape of Ann Elisabeth Nordbo (www.spamhuntress.com). Her skills include analysing raw access logs and persuading ISPs and web-hosting companies to terminate spammer accounts.
