COMEDY: PICK OF THE WEEK

Independent, The (London),  Sep 17, 2005  by James Rampton

After a recent appearance by the black stand-up Stephen K Amos, one critic raved: 'Move over, Lenny. Amos' five-star show makes him a contender for Henry's crown.'

The winner of the Time Out Performer of the Year Award last year, Amos certainly possesses a rare charisma on stage. The comedian, who made a good fist of an appearance on BBC1's Have I Got News For You and has recorded a pilot with Hat Trick Productions entitled Mob Rule, has the ability to invest even such potentially hackneyed subjects as travelling by Tube, wearing glasses and nostalgia for your schooldays with a welcome freshness.

A rising star on the comedy circuit, he also succeeds in creating an instant rapport with audiences. As he proved with his well- regarded recent Edinburgh show, 'The 100 Greatest Things Ever', Amos is one of those people who can raise laughter without even opening their mouths.

Jongleurs, Birmingham (0870 787 0707) Fri & 24 Sept, 7pm, from pounds 13-pounds 15
