Dear Diary ...
Independent, The (London), May 16, 2007 by OLIVER DUFF
No corpse jokes at the back, please, but move over Alan Clark: Westminster has a rival diarist. The wannabe deputy prime minister Alan Johnson disclosed yesterday that he has kept journals of his life in Parliament.
The contest front-runner, hawking for support, released an arshlickin' entry from 1 July 1992 about one Gordon Brown MP: "Could this man be a future prime minister, I ask myself ? I hope he takes over from John Smith after 10 years."
A J might yet have publishing executives rushing for the inkwell. Says the (Conservative) political publisher Iain Dale: "Alan Johnson is an engaging figure, quite gossipy and indiscreet, so if he has kept proper diaries and he goes on to play a meaningful role in the final two years of the Labour government, they will be worth reading."
