Independent, The (London), May 2, 2008
Home News IN BRIEF
*A double-headed Roman bust spotted by a British soldier in a Jerusalem market has fetched 240,000 at auction. The sculpture of Bacchus, the god of wine, and his lover, Ariadne, dates back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. It was found in 1941 by Somerset de Chair, a young British army officer who later became a Tory MP. The bust was inherited by his eldest son Rodney de Chair in 1995. The sale, at three times the guide price, was made at Bonhams in London.
