The Good Soul of Szechuan
Bertolt Brecht's landmark parable, completed in 1943, is simultaneously a monument to the German dramatist's rejection of "realistic" theatre and a testament to his Marxist values. In David Harrower's new translation, Richard Jones directs Jane Horrocks (above) as Shen Te, the eponymous good soul, who acquires a tobacco shop as reward for her compassion from a band of nomadic gods. When Shen Te's generosity brings the enterprise to its knees, her stony cousin, Shui Ta, arrives to restore order. But who is he? And how will the gods (and the audience) react to his new regime?
