WORLD MARKETS

The FTSE 100 eked out modest gains, dominated by record oil prices that set energy shares alight but cast the shadow of inflation over the wider market. The blue-chip gauge closed up 6.5 points at 6,198.1. Oil shares stormed ahead - BP rose 3.5 per cent, Royal Dutch Shell 4.7 per cent, BG Group 5.5 per cent and Cairn Energy 4.6 per cent.
