WORLD MARKETS

The Hang Seng dropped as investors locked in profits, taking their cue from declines in mainland China and Wall Street overnight. The index fell 528.2, or 2.3 per cent, to 22,797.6. Fixed-line phone company China Netcom lost 4.1 per cent, as did its soon-to-be owner, China Unicom. In China, the Shanghai Composite index shed 6.5 per cent.
