Candide

Trailing controversy from its earlier showings at the Chtelet, Paris, and La Scala, Robert Carsen's staging of Leonard Bernstein's cornucopian Broadway operetta uncovers fresh seams of satire within its Voltairean expose of human folly. It updates the story to an America poised between the McCarthyite 1950s, when the work was first conceived, and the Bush-whacked US of today. Toby Spence sings the hopeful hero, with Anna Christy (below) as his glittering Cunegonde, Beverley Klein as the one-buttocked Old Lady and Alex Jennings as Pangloss. London Coliseum, London WC2, Mon to 12 Jul
