24 JUNE 1940

Independent, The (London),  Jun 24, 2008

Days like these

SIR HENRY CHIPS CHANNON writes in his diary: "I was called at 7, dressed and ate nervously; at 8.15 we set out for Euston. Honor and I had the child [son Paul, aged 5, about to be evacuated to the USA] between us; he was gay and interested. At the station there was a queue of Rolls-Royces and liveried servants. It seemed that everyone we knew was there. We led our child to his compartment, and clung hungrily to him until the whistle blew and then after a feverish hug and kiss, we left him. I care more for Paul than for all of France, and mind his departure dreadfully. For the first time in my life I felt a surge of remorse for my own appallingly callous treatment of my parents, who perhaps once loved me as I love Paul.

As the ceasefire between France and Germany came into effect this morning, we can now be prepared for the Battle of Britain - or rather on Britain."
