Early poll likely as coalition falls

Independent, The (London),  Jul 8, 2008

WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF

VIENNA Austria's governing coalition has collapsed, with a poll looking likely in September, after conservatives said they could not work with the Social Democrats, led by Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer. Accused of poor leadership and unpopular with his own ranks, Mr Gusenbauer said he would not seek re-election as chancellor. The conservative People's Party chief, Wilhelm Molterer, demanded an early election, adding: "We can't let the Social Democratic crisis become an Austrian crisis." The government has been hit by feuds over health, taxes and schools.
