Human embryos 'better frozen'

Independent, The (London),  Jul 9, 2008

Home News IN BRIEF

*Human embryos are better when frozen and thawed before use, a study has found. Researchers from Denmark discovered that frozen embryos produced healthier babies than fresh ones. The infants had a higher birth weight and were less likely to suffer congenital problems than fresh embryo babies. In addition, fewer were born as twins or triplets, which is known to increase the risk of harmful complications.

Pregnancy duration was longer for mothers incubating thawed embryos, and when born their babies were on average 200g heavier. The study leader, Dr Anja Pinborg, of the Copenhagen University Hospital Rigshospitalet, said: "If our results continue to be positive, [thawed embryos] can be accepted as a safe procedure that can be used more frequently in future."
