Food shortages threaten forests

Independent, The (London),  Jul 14, 2008

Home News IN BRIEF

*Rising demand for food, fuel and wood threatens to destroy the world's forests in the "last great global land grab", studies warned. Two reports from the US-based Rights and Resources Initiative said that deforestation would in-crease climate change, push a billion people further into poverty and trigger wars. According to one study, an estimated 515 million more hectares, twice the land available, will be needed by 2030 to meet food, bioenergy and wood demands.
