Victory brings rugby revival

t Since the 2003 World Cup began, rugby clubs around the country have each seen 10-15 new youngsters wanting to join. This equates to an increase so far of around 10,000 new players across the country.

t In the past week, Gilbert Rugby, the world's number one rugby ball maker (based in Rugby) has seen a dramatic rise in sales. "Before the final we had 800 extra orders for balls," says Jamie Hassard, Brand Manager at Gilbert. "But in just two days last week we had 16,000 extra orders."

t The John Lewis group report that in the week since England won the World Cup, there has been a 320 per cent rise in sales of rugby kit and equipment compared with the same period last year.

t Since the beginning of November the Rugby Football Union has laid on 89 "come and try" events. These have each attracted an average of 40 new teenage players.

t The game at university level is experienced a surge in interest, with new competitions and events being organised, especially in London and the West.
