DISCS: CLASSICAL HHHHH Lachner Sangerfahrt op 33: Muller/ Hammer
Independent on Sunday, The, Apr 11, 2004 by Anna Picard
A close confidante of Schubert, Franz Lachner shared a similar genius in subtly adjusting strophic songs to intensify emotional tension. If Rufus Muller and Christoph Hammer stretch a point by calling Lachner's Opus 33 collection a song-cycle, their performance is greatly enhanced by developing the songs as a cohesive narrative.
Muller's gleaming tenor voice communicates passion, humour and disdain fluently, while Hammer's delicacy at the fortepiano makes a very strong case for a positive re- evaluation of Lachner's lieder. Superb.
