WATCH THIS FACE: Juliet
Independent on Sunday, The, Aug 7, 2005
Her debut album (out now on Virgin) 'has moments that make you believe in pop again', according to our esteemed critic. But who is Juliet? And is she serious when she says she had no idea who Madonna was until she was 18? 'It's true. My parents were strict, strict Christians,' she explains. 'Although I could sing before I could speak I wasn't allowed to listen to secular music.
My mom was also a teacher at the school I went to in New Jersey, so she knew EVERYTHING.' No surprise, then, that when Juliet rebelled, she did so with conviction. 'I went from angel to satanist,' she laughs. 'I got so many tattoos. I got an electrical socket " explain that. I got it on that clichd spot on my lower back. People used to constantly say, 'my cell phone's dead, can I plug it in?" But Juliet, ironically, is a power-charger for this summer's dance floors. Her album, Random Order, has a number of surefire tracks. But why the title? Are we supposed to play the tracks out of order? 'If you wish so " I'm not going to dictate how to listen to the music. Once I've written a song it's out of my hands. The title is just because I'm obsessed with oxymorons. It was either going to be that or Violent Peace.'
