Letter: Higher arts

Independent on Sunday, The,  Jan 1, 2006  by David Rodway

What better example of the 'two cultures' divide than the jibe by your science editor, Steve Connor, at arts, humanities and media studies graduates in journalism who misreport science (Readers' Editor, 11 December)? Yes, mere opinions are rewarded over hard-won thought. But it's crass to judge the arts by the inferior modes now dominating them, and see them as a soft option.

The 'two cultures' schism is less an art/science rift than a split of science, art and politics from the philosophical examination of whether core concepts such as truth, reality, ideology and human nature are being used coherently or not.
