Letter: Savage truth
Independent on Sunday, The, Jan 1, 2006 by Gill Peers
In his review of King Kong (18 December), Jonathan Romney sanctimoniously declares Jackson's depiction of Skull Islanders as 'grotesque slavery bogey people' to be an 'ugly blemish' in an otherwise enjoyable film. Jackson's remake is a faithful adaptation of the original film and as such he has retained the portrayal of the Skull Islanders as native savages, to use English imperial parlance. What would Romney have Jackson do? Make the Skull Islanders suburbanites of European descent so British writers are spared images which might pique sentiments of imperial colonial shame?
