Film: Boudu Saved from Drowning Jean Renoir 85 MINS, PG
Independent on Sunday, The, Jan 1, 2006 by Nicholas Barber
Jean Renoir's beloved farcical fable is showing for three weeks at the National Film Theatre. Its title character is a permanently drunk, Santa-bearded tramp who tries to end it all by jumping into the Seine. His rescuer is Monsieur Lestingois, a bookshop proprietor who takes him in as a house guest, and hopes, by providing the tramp with a suit and a shave, to convert him to the ways of bourgeois propriety.
It's so anarchic, risqu and downright loopy that even now, 70 years on, you wonder how they got away with it.
