Open, close.. we take these movements for granted, but furniture designers are turning such functions into aesthetic performances. Patrick Jouin's folding stool for Materialise MGX is made using the rapid prototyping process, a kind of 3D printing where a computer cuts a design out from a solid block of material. Its pinching hinge means it's the first rapid prototyping object with moving parts. Osko+Deichmann's Shell chair (below) is modelled on an opening clam. Its simple design makes it practical and easy on the eye. An opening door inspired the Doorway light by Vogt & Weizenegger. The light fits into a doorframe and turns on when a person passes a point in the frame, offering a new take on movement in space.
