THE NUMBER_250,000

Independent on Sunday, The,  Jun 3, 2007

County court judgments against consumer debtors have soared to their highest level in a decade. A shade under a quarter of a million individuals were handed CCJs in the first three months of this year, figures from the Registry Trust revealed last week - up by 9 per cent on the same period last year.

Around 70 per cent of cases were the result of too much debt piling up on credit or store cards. A CCJ stains your credit record and makes it harder to obtain good deals on interest rates.

Lenders are "increasingly using the court route to deal with unsecured debts", said Malcolm Hurlston, the chairman of the Registry Trust.

Consumers can help improve their credit rating by paying down large chunks of debt rather than just the minimum 2 or 3 per cent each month.
