Dan Deacon

Spiderman of the Rings

CarparkIf I tell you that it opens with a track called "Woody Woodpecker", in which a music-box melody, a synth tone and samples of that annoying cartoon laugh build towards an almighty crescendo, you'll have an idea of the tone of Baltimore scenester Dan Deacon's album. Though not, perhaps, of its quality, nor its persistent catchiness. Laurie Anderson-ish performance art sound collages done up in the DayGlo lunacy of new rave, with a punk-funk backbeat: all of your critical faculties are telling you that it's rubbish, yet still your foot taps the beat and a grin spreads across your face.
