The Circus, 1870-1950 ed Noel Daniel Taschen Pounds 120

For almost 100 years from the middle of the 19th century onwards, the American circus was 'the greatest show on earth'. Strongmen, trapeze artists, daredevils and freaks criss-crossed the country on 20,000 miles of railroad and performed for audiences of up to 14,000 at a time. Taschen's colourful homage, tells the story with a host of fascinating images by photographers such as Weegee, Walker Evans and Stanley Kubrick, whose 1948 shot on the back lot of the Ringling Bros, Barnum & Bailey Circus, is shown right.
