Euro 92's Great Dane puts Aberdeen on red alert, Kim Vilfort Brondby

Sunday Mirror, Oct 13, 1996 by ARTHUR GILL

Kim Vilfort became a Great Dane when he played a key role in capturing Euro 92 for Denmark in a shock triumph over Germany.

Now the veteran playmaker is gunning for Aberdeen to take Brondby nearer UEFA Cup glory.

Vilfort quit the international team after scoring five goals, all crucial in getting Denmark to England and Euro 96 during the summer.

He gave up so he could give all to his club, Brondby.

And he revealed the Danish champions are desperate to go all the way for missing out on the money-spinning Champions League.

They were Pole-axed by Widzew Lodz after blowing a 3-0 lead at home in their preliminary qualifying tie.

Vilfort insisted yesterday: "That is a warning about what can happen.

"We thought we had the tie won and lost concentration and two late goals.

"That will not happen at Aberdeen on Tuesday. I don't know much about their players but they are a team with a pedigree in Europe.

"They always seem to be in the top half of the Scottish Premier league but they are obviously not as good as either Rangers or Celtic.

"Our manager Ebbe Skovdahl has seen them play and has been in regular contact with Brian Laudrup and Eric Bo Andersson at Ibrox.

"We will be well briefed but we expect a physical game.

"But the outcome will depend on how Brondby perform.

"Apart from myself and John Jensen, who had a spell with Arsenal, we have a very young side.

"Some of them are exceptional. Mogens Krogh would certainly be Denmark's first choice keeper if it were not for Peter Schmeichel, who we sold to Manchester United.

"Ole Bjur is a highly creative midfielder and Peter Moller is a tremendous finisher who is right in form.

"If this team can remain together for another two years it can be as good as any in our history.

"We travel to Aberdeen full of confidence.

"It is a very similar situation to a year ago when we were on an unbeaten league run and went to Liverpool to eliminate them.

"Once again we are well ahead in the league. We know that we can make a major impact in this competition if we get it right."
