Madonna: Finally uncovered

Nick, now a married father of two, discovered religion in his last months at Adams High and is now pastor at an evangelical church in Traverse City, five hours drive from Rochester.

He says: "Madonna is a restless soul. She is changing all the time, always looking for something new to fill the spiritual void. I might be wrong, but I really don't think she can be happy. I think there's a hole in her soul."

Madonna lost her virginity at 15, to school football player Russell Long, two years her senior, like Nick, a pin-up figure in the girls' locker rooms.

Russell, now a parcel delivery driver, says: "I don't know if her agreeing to sex was anything to do with me. I think it was more to do with adventure and the experience of the unknown.

"We started seeing each other on weekends. We'd go on long drives just to be by ourselves. I had a light blue 1966 Cadillac - with lots of room on the back seat. Boy, did she love that car."

But the first time they had sex was at his home, when his parents were away for the weekend.

"It started just like any other date, gawking at each other, slurping our Cokes and me wondering how to get her into my bed at home. Then Madonna just said,: 'Why don't we go back to your place?' I was really stunned by her forwardness. The whole thing gave me quite a charge.

"But neither of us had a great time that night. We were both embarrassed and didn't look at each other or say very much.

"I remember I had my arm around her as I lay on my bed looking at posters on my bedroom wall. Then Madonna said, 'Do you want to do it or not?'"

They may have made love indoors, but Madonna was still clearly in the driving seat. "It was like she'd made up her mind she was going to lose her virginity that night, no matter what," says Russell.

"She was pretty quiet, sort of methodical about it. I was 17, but I didn't really know how old Madonna was. If my parents had known she was only 15, they would have hit the roof."

There were more testing moments later for the Caddy's rear axle. "Usually, after it was all over, Madonna would get dressed very quickly," says Russell. "The times I liked the best were when we stayed cuddled in the back of the car naked. She used to kiss with her eyes open and her mouth closed. I didn't like that. But once she got going she was fine," he says.

Russell says Madonna felt her brothers and sisters didn't like her. "She was always saying how she was going to show them. She would show everyone."

At school, he claims, she liked kissing in the corridors and allowing boys to fondle her.

They drifted apart after going out together for six months when Madonna went to university to study dance, and Russell left school to start work.

Losing her virginity might have been a landmark event, but Madonna didn't go shouting it from the rooftops.

Even at university, Madonna the sexual predator, was yet to emerge into the open. The singer's former flatmate Whitley Setrakian recalls: "When I knew her, Madonna was never promiscuous. She was a flirt, but she used to think very carefully before sleeping with someone. She was not vastly experienced sexually."
