WEDDING RIFT ON 007'S BIG DAY; Brosnan finally bonds with Keely in

Sunday Mirror,  Aug 5, 2001  by DEIRDRE O'DONOVAN

007 star Pierce Brosnan formed an eternal bond yesterday with long- term love Keely Shaye-Smith in a star studded, million pound wedding ceremony.

However, the special day was tarnished slightly by a bitter family feud that kept his father's family away from the glamourous event.

Cousin Pierce Wallace said he wished Brosnan well on his wedding day but said: "He has made it clear over the years that he doesn't want anything to do with us."

Hundreds of well wishers gathered outside Ballintubber Abbey in Co Mayo hoping to catch a glimpse of the 49-year-old star and his bride Keely.

But an alleged Hello! magazine deal and a 160 strong security team meant the wedding was an operation worthy of Bond himself.

Bouncers, huge screens and sound-proofed windows made sure the couple and their showbiz guests were kept from the prying eyes of the world's Press who had gathered there.

The 13th Century Abbey, which nestles on a hillside in the heart of the Irish countryside, was decorated with thous- ands of exotic blooms chosen by the couple themselves in Holland.

Twenty-four hours before the wedding dozens of designers worked furiously to create the fairy-tale wedding Brosnan and his 37-year- old bride had tried three times before to celebrate.

Hundreds of yards of plush red carpet were laid over the white marble floors of the church, while pure white muslin was draped around the interior.

And in an effort to combat any secret recordings, the windows of the 800-year-old Abbey were sound-proofed.

The couple wrote their own vows which, according to one insider, reflected their deep love for each other and their strong family values.

A choir of young local girls sang throughout the ceremony which they described as very moving.

Again Brosnan and his bride took the time to choose the music for their special day together.

It was a day of sunshine and showers and Bond's beautiful bride was thankful for the ornate wooden security screens erected at the west entrance to the church. Keely arrived in a 1966 white Rolls Royce and, said an inside source, looked breathtaking in an off- white sheath gown by top US designer Richard Tyler.

One guest said "She looked absolutely stunning. Her gown was very simple but very stylish, topped off with diamond gems given to her as a gift by her new husband."

Brosnan arrived at the church in an S Series Mercedes bearing the licence plate 00NO7 with plenty of time before the 4pm ceremony was due to kick off. He was accompanied by personal assistant and best friend Brawn Roylace who acted as best man.

All Pierce's children made up the rest of the wedding party acting as bridesmaids and groomsmen.

And the couple even had a dressing-room erected just inside the doors of the church so they could look their best for the wedding photos which they sold to Hello Magazine for a reputed pounds 1 million.

Their wedding guests, including Hollywood star Rod Steiger, arrived at the ceremony in 16 luxury cars and four luxury coaches.

After the hour-long ceremony the couple and their guests returned to Ashford Castle for a scrumptious feast held in a purpose built marquee in the 350-acre grounds of the stately pile.

The castle, which dates from 1228, is a favourite with politicians and Hollywood stars alike with past guests including Tony Blair, Ronald Reagan and Fred Astaire.

The 150 guests paid pounds 650 per night to stay at the historic castle which boasts its own nine hole golf course and is ranked among the world's top 50 hotels.

During the meal the wedding guests were serenaded with love songs from top Irish traditional band The Chieftains.

The wedding party danced the night away to traditional Ceili music.

Missing from it all, however, were Brosnan's father Tom's Mayo relatives. Although his mum May and her family enjoyed the plush day out, the long running animosity between Brosnan and Tom's family meant they were denied an invite.

The Hollywood star claims Tom walked out on him and his mum when he was just a toddler - a claim firmly denied by Tom's family.

Brosnan's parents married in Navan in 1952 but separated two years later when Tom, who died in 1988, moved to London to work as a carpenter.

The Bond star has always claimed that he was abandoned by his father and never knew him but Tom's family in Co Kerry insist that he made numerous attempts to contact his son.

But it was only during the star's visit to Ireland to shoot his then hit TV series Remington Steele in 1984 that a meeting with his elderly father took place with the help of his first wife Cassandra.

Pierce Wallace from Tralee said: "He was an old man delighted to know that his son was getting on well.

"When they met, both of them seemed delighted. As they walked into the bar of the Berkeley Court Hotel in Dublin, Tom seemed anxious to show he was not interested in his son's wealth.

"He said, 'Leave your wallet in your pocket Pierce. I'll buy the drinks'."
