CRICKET: REF RAPS INDIANS

Sunday Mirror,  Nov 10, 2002

REFEREE Mike Proctor called on India's cricket authorities to crack down on crowd trouble after hooliganism marred the one-day international against West Indies in Nagpur yesterday.

"I'm not particularly pleased with the situation on crowd behaviour," said Proctor. "We simply can't let this sort of thing go on.

"It's for the Indian authorities to sort this out. It can't be policed by the ICC in London. The International Cricket Council have already asked Proctor for a report on disturbances during last week's one-day international in Jamshedpur.

West Indies' captain Carl Hooper saw his side win by seven wickets yesterday but he was close to leading his team off the field when stones were thrown at his men.

Proctor added: "Hooper said if it did happen again, he would have come off the field. I would have allowed them to do so."

West Indies opener Chris Gayle hit 103 as the tourists made 280- 3, passing India's 279-9 with four balls to spare.

Jacques Kallis led South Africa to a big first innings lead over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Johannesburg. Kallis made an unbeaten 75 as the Springboks closed on 378-7 in reply to the tourists' 192.

And Zimbabwe paceman Andy Blignaut took 5-79 as Pakistan collapsed to 285 all out on the opening day of the first Test in Harare.
