Rugby Union: Scots cruise in fast Laney
Sunday Mirror, Nov 10, 2002 by DAVID KELSO
SLOPPY Scotland outpaced and outpowered the rugged Romanians - but failed to fully cash-in on their dominance.
A year ago, Romania were on the receiving end of a 134-0 hammering at the hands of England.
But they have rallied strongly and lost by just three points to Scotland previously.
Scotland scored the opening try in the fourth minute through Stuart Grimes which Brendan Laney converted.
Romania opened their account through a Ionut Tofan penalty but four minutes later the home side scored with a Laney kick.
And they had to make do with another Laney penalty to widen the gap in the 24th minute. It seemed only a matter of time before Scotland would break through again and it was wing Chris Paterson who burst into the action to claim it.
Laney confidently added the conversion to give his side a useful cushion at the half-way stage.
Scotland made the perfect start to the second half as Martin Leslie scored their thrid try.
Romania finally ran out of steam when Budge Pountney burrowed through from point-blank range. Laney converted.
Romania refused to buckle and Tofan sneaked in for consolation try which he converted.
Scot Stuart Moffat made it a dream debut with an injury time try.
