GAA: MISERY FOR MALONE
Sunday Mirror, Nov 10, 2002
THERE was no hiding place for Glenavon players after this latest debacle.
Angry fans vented their feelings and booed their favourites off the pitch at the end of another disappointing 90 minutes.
Even manager Colin Malone refused to defend the indefensible and admitted: "We were only committed for 45 minutes and that simply isn't enough.
"Our first-half performance cost us the result and Norman Kelly's sending off didn't help our cause either although I felt we were a little hard done by in that respect."
Midfield battler Kelly got his marching orders in the 56th minute for a second bookable offence and suddenly a hard job was becoming impossible.
Glenavon were already trailing 2-1 at this point and while they took the game to Omagh for much of the remaining time they always looked vulnerable.
Ivan Sproule broke the deadlock in the sixth minute following a darting run through the heart of the home defence keeping a cool head to stroke the ball past Paul Rice.
And while former Northern Ireland ace George O'Boyle levelled within six minutes, rampaging Omagh were ahead again before the break.
Barry Patton cashed in on a poor clearance to steer the ball home for his sixth goal of the season.
Sub Austin Friel wrapped up the points with a third goal right on time and that was the signal for the disgruntled home fans to explode.
Omagh boss Roy McCreadie said: "While I'm happy to have picked up three points away from home we did make it hard for ourselves, especially after the Glenavon lad was sent off."
