SWOOP NETS 46 OWLS

Sunday Mirror,  Nov 10, 2002

A PENSIONER has been arrested after 46 endangered owls were found caged in a house.

The discovery, which included the biggest owl in the world, the eagle owl, was made after 30 police and RSPCA officers raided two homes.

The protected owls could have fetched thousands of pounds on the black market, police said. The owls, including the barn and tawny species, were removed after raids in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and Bedfont, Middlesex.

The 66-year-old man, from Hemel Hempstead, was arrested under the Cruelty to Animals Act and given police bail. A source said there was no indication the owls had been illegally taken from the wild.
