Gown & out

Sunday Mirror, Aug 24, 2003 by DEIRDRE O'DONOVAN, Fashion editor

THE leaving certs are over, and the first round offers have been sent out.

So now it's time to think about the debs ball and, most importantly, what to wear.

Forget hideous meringues and bridesmaid-style dresses, get yourself into something slinky and sexy.

And the best news is that you don't have to spend a fortune on a frock because there is something for everyone on the high street.

At A Wear get that 40s feeling with a black and white polka dot dress with halter neck detail and full skirt for EUR50.

Team this up with a little black cardi sitting on the shoulder, and a very cute black bag.

Or if the 80s is more your thing then they have a ruched front mini halter dress in black or red at just eEUR30, together with a metallic bag at EUR12.

They also have a more traditional style outfit with a Quinn and Donnelly long taffeta skirt in copper or red at EUR100, with a matching strappy top at EUR60.

At Debenhams they have an amazing selection of debs dresses by designers such as Maria Grachvogel with prices starting at around EUR165.

They also have a great range of accessories from feather boas at EUR23, long gold gloves at EUR15.25 and bags from EUR18.25.

Animal prints are really big news this season, so head for Marks and Spencer.

They have a gorgeous gown which is sure to make any man roar, at just EUR105.

Also on the high street Next have a racy red corset dress costing about EUR95 which will look amazing for your big night out. Next also have a great selection of accessories, from beaded bags to slinky heals, at prices that won't break the bank.

Also for the more traditional debs dress, Monsoon have some fabulous frocks.

From slinky silver satins, which are huge news this season, to floral brocades, they have something to suit everyone. Our favourite is their gorgeous rich burgundy gown which costs EUR229.

Also from the high street, Kookai have some seriously sexy styles, which can be worn again and again.

Only for the most daring of debutantes they have a long lace top, teamed with a black chiffon skirt.

The top will set you back EUR114.95, while the skirt costs EUR94.95.

You date will be pleased, but your dad definitely won't be.

But if you have a little more cash to splash then why not opt for something from one of Ireland's top designers.

Deborah Veale's evening wear is soft and sensual with fabulous velvet, chiffon encrusted with sequins and crystals.

Her stunning chiffon and silk burgundy evening dress costs EUR895.

But the most important thing to remember is to get a dress that looks great, and will still look great in the morning.
