Football: United are told: Hands off Andrei

AC MILAN president Silvio Berlusconi has issued a "hands off" warning to Manchester United over prolific marksman Andrei Shevchenko.

United attempted to broker a deal with the European champions by offering David Beckham and pounds 10million for the 27-year-old in the summer. At the time Berlusconi dismissed the interest as laughable, insisting he would rather cut off his arms and legs than part with the striker.

Nevertheless, there is renewed speculation that United are ready to make another move for Shevchenko, prompting Berlusconi to make it clear that the Old Trafford club are wasting their time.

"Andrei Shevchenko is not for sale at any price," he said. "We are looking to build on last season's success, so where would that leave us if we sold Shevchenko?

"I have tired of telling people he is not for sale and any club, including Manchester United, are wasting their time. He's going nowhere."

As well as contractual problems relating to security for Shevchenko and his family, the player has no wish to leave the Italian giants.

"It's flattering to be linked with other clubs but I have never been happier than I am at Milan," said Shevchenko. "I signed a long contract and I intend to fulfil it. The only way I would ever consider my future is if AC Milan wanted to sell me."
