TEEN DREAM

CHELSEY Fielding was fed up with her childhood bedroom long before she reached her current age of 15.

She longed for a private space where she could invite friends without feeling embarrassed by what seemed to her to be terribly childish frilly gingham decor. "I didn't like my room any more so I would let it get into a terrible mess," says Chelsey, of Weybridge, Surrey.

So when parents Anne, 38, and Phil, 37, redecorated, she gave them a clear vision of what she wanted.

COLOUR SCHEME

CHELSEY's favourite colour is purple but Anne and Phil thought that a deep colour would be too much all round. "Mum came home with wallpaper samples. The only one I liked was plain purple and a purple circle border but she insisted I have a silver and white circle design on two walls, which I was mad about. Now it's there I love it and it looks brilliant," says Chelsey.

Big Circle wallpaper, pounds 7.99 a roll; border pounds 6.99 a roll, both Coloroll (01282 727400); reversible circle bedlinen (pillowcase, duvet cover), pounds 19.99; Lakeland Limited (015394 88100); bed canopy, pounds 29.99, Urchin (0870 720 0709).

BLINDS

AFTER living for years with frilly curtains, Chelsey opted for simple Roman blinds - pale purple rather than the deep shade she originally chose. Her window seat was covered in matching fabric with scatter cushions in both shades.

FURNITURE AND LIGHTS

CHELSEY'S old things didn't match the new scheme but the family found inexpensive replacements at IKEA. Two cabinets (one silver, one white) and a small white cupboard gave her enough space without dominating the room. "I'm into minimalism now - I think we almost filled a skip clearing out my bedroom," she says.

The room was completed with a pale purple bedside light and a 4- spot ceiling light with a dimmer switch.

ACCESSORIES AND FLOOR COVERING

BOXES from Paperchase keep Chelsey's things tidy. But her favourite item of all is the purple canopy over the bed (main picture). "Mum and dad agreed it could be the deeper purple because it's netting," she says. A reversible duvet cover also featuring circles and the lilac scatter cushions keep the colour scheme consistent.

Chelsey wanted a dark carpet but Anne and Phil felt it would close in the room. They agreed on pale silver in the end - now no one's allowed in with shoes on.
