BRIT YOGHURT

BRITISH yoghurt will be renamed "fermented milk pudding" - if Brussels has its way.

Under plans being discussed by EU officials, only yoghurts made using the sourtasting bacteria according to traditional Bulgarian recipes will be called "yoghurt".

Other versions, including British and Greek yoghurts which do not conform to the new European standard, would be renamed fermented milk pudding.

The name change is being discussed by a European Commission working group called the Commission Milk Methods of Analysis Experts. And it has already caused an outcry among MPs at home.

Last night the Lib Dems' Norman Baker said: "This sort of thing gives the European Union a bad name. People know what yoghurt is and they don't want it called 'fermented milk pudding'. The EU should stop this waste of time and drop the idea immediately."

The British yoghurt market is worth more than pounds 750million a year. Health Minister Caroline Flint confirmed she was aware of talks to set standards for the composition and labelling of yoghurt. But she added: "No formal proposals for legislation have been made by the European Commission."

EURO CANNOT BE SERIOUS..

OTHER daft rules include:

Cucumbers have to be straight and bananas not "excessively curved".

Carrots are classified as fruit, not veg.

Our chocolate may be renamed "vegelate" because the EU says it has too much vegetable fat.
